Haridwar is a vegetarian city by tradition, and its food is simple, fast and filling. The best way to try it is on foot, early in the morning, through the lanes around Moti Bazaar and Upper Road.

Kachori and aloo sabzi

Breakfast here usually means crisp kachoris or puris with spicy potato curry, served in leaf bowls. Many shops have been frying the same recipes for generations, and the busiest counters tend to be the best.

Something sweet

Hot jalebis come out of the oil all morning. Sweet shops also sell rabri, peda and seasonal treats. In winter, look for gajar halwa. In summer, a tall glass of lassi topped with malai is the local cure for the heat.

Tips for the trail

  • Go before 10 a.m., when the food is freshest and the lanes are still cool.
  • Carry small change. Many stalls are cash-first, though UPI is now common.
  • Onion and garlic are often left out near the ghats, following religious custom.

A plate of kachori and a clay cup of chai near the river is as much a part of Haridwar as the temples.
