Haridwar and Rishikesh in One Day: A Realistic Plan

The two cities are close, but traffic and crowds decide how much you can fit in. A sensible itinerary.

Haridwar and Rishikesh are only about 20 kilometres apart, so many visitors try to see both in a day. It can be done, as long as you choose a few highlights and don't try to cover everything.

Morning in Haridwar

Start early with a dip or a quiet walk at Har Ki Pauri, then have breakfast in the old market lanes. If you have time, take the ropeway up to Mansa Devi before the crowds build.

Midday transfer

Move to Rishikesh before noon. Shared autos, buses and taxis all run between the two cities. On weekends, the road can slow down near the bridges and market areas.

Afternoon and evening in Rishikesh

Walk across one of the suspension-bridge crossings and take in the cafés and ashrams along the river. In the evening, the aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan is a calmer alternative to Haridwar's larger ceremony.

Keep in mind

  • Pick one aarti. Trying to catch both on the same evening rarely works.
  • River rafting in Rishikesh needs a half-day on its own and depends on the season.
  • Carry a light layer, because evenings by the river can turn cool.
